Just recently, my mom and I started a program for students whose parents can’t afford private tutoring. My mother saw a post on Facebook where a child’s parents were paying hundreds to thousands of dollars for a tutor while other kids need the tutoring but can’t afford it.

Mom reached out to me to see if I’d be up for starting a free tutoring program for those kids who don’t get a fair shot to make the most out of their education. Of course I said yes, and I was off posting on Instagram and Snapchat to recruit other students who’d be up for helping to tutor. I’ve had about five students reach out to offer their time to tutor kids, knowing that they wouldn’t be paid for it. With school being online, tutoring would also be online.

We haven’t heard from any parents or students who need our services yet, but we’re hoping to increase the amount of exposure that this program has and make it a legit thing. I want this to become a real thing not just for this year, but I want it to continue once I have graduated from Carver.

Seeing how my fellow classmates are willing to put in their time to help me and other students means the world to me. It also shone a light on how I’ve been staying in touch with my friends throughout my Corona break. I’ve had many of them reach out to me when they simply needed a smile or a distraction from reality. The mental health impact that isolation and closing schools has had on not just my friends but hundreds of thousands of unknown kids hurts me. I just wish I could help them all.

I know that I’m going to be missing out on a lot due to Corona, but I plan to make the most of the situation. My goal is to make a difference and work on self-improvement; I can’t do either if I put my life on pause and use the pandemic as an “excuse.” The world won’t pause for anyone.
